We set out to keep as much of a building’s original fabric as we can, and where something can be restored, we will always recommend that before anything new.

What is a window condition report?

A window condition report is an independent, photographed record of every window, door or shutter you ask us to look at: what is original, what has been altered, what condition it is in and whether it should be repaired or replaced. It is what most of our clients come to us for.

Each opening is graded for urgency, so you know what to deal with first, and given a clear repair or replacement recommendation with the reasons set out. The report covers sash and casement windows, timber doors and internal shutters, and is used for listed building consent applications, planning permission, tendering and planned maintenance.

The report is backed by photographs and ready for submission to a planning authority. It is written to be used by homeowners, architects, contractors and conservation officers alike, so everyone involved is working from the same information.

Independent advice, backed by 40 years of heritage joinery

Heritage Window Consultants Ltd is part of The Barnsbury Group, a family-run heritage joinery business founded in 1980. That is where our knowledge comes from. For over four decades the group has designed, restored and manufactured traditional timber windows and doors for historic properties, and that experience is what allows us to tell you what can be restored, what should be replaced, and what matters for planning.

The consultancy is run independently of the group’s joinery businesses. You pay for the survey and the report. Most clients take it to their own architect or contractor. If you would like a quote for the work we have recommended, we can arrange one through the right business in the group, but only if you ask us to. Either way, our advice does not depend on what happens next.
